They became clandestine, organised themselves and kept their Christian faith intact for two hundred and fifty years, without the help of a priest. In secret and in prayer, they waited from generation to generation to be permitted freedom of worship, that inalienable right of every human being. When missionaries were able to return to Japan in the 19th century, a delegation of these underground Christians came in great secret to meet them and be acknowledged.
