-- Vladimir Ghika, born a Romanian prince into the Orthodox confession, a convert to Catholicism, ordained a priest, died a martyr, is a prominent figure of 20th century Christianity. The trial for his beatification is now taking place. In more than one domain, this apostle opened the way for the 'aggiornamento' so desired by Vatican II. Close to the Maritain circle in Meudon, he felt concerned about the sanctification of laymen and the clergy. Among his spiritual sons are Father Henri Caffarel and Jean Daujat. To support priests in their ministry, he created, with Yvonne Estienne, the 'Virgo Fidelis' association, a spiritual fraternity of prayer and suffering. Moreover, the community of brothers and sisters of St. John which he founded in Auberive heralded new communities today devoted to evangelization. A bridge between East and West, Mgr Ghika was also a pioneer of unity in Christ's Church. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, Mgr Ghika lived in the continual instant of God's presence; which is why all contact with his fellowmen, especially visiting the poor, was to him a liturgy: 'the liturgy of our fellows'. At the same time, such contacts are an opening and reception of their needs, however varied. In this way, his 'theology of need' was elaborated by this man who was never indifferent to the suffering of others. At the source of service to others is the word of God and the Eucharist, often prolonged by silent worship. Following the example of his lord and master, Mgr Ghika gave even his life. His martyrdom is the supreme testimony of his heroic charity: 'death can destroy everything,' he said, 'except love'. [Excerpts from the preface by Dany Dideberg, S.J.]
